Probiotic Microflora Help Us Stay Healthy

There are many microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of humans and animals, known as intestinal flora. These good flora that help us to stay healthy are also called Probiotics.  We have a symbiotic relationship with them, one that benefits each of us. *

 

Of all the functions performed by friendly flora, the most vital is that of keeping harmful bacteria from getting out of control. If there are enough good bacteria, the bad bacteria are literally starved out and eliminated naturally. There are also natural by-products produced by the good flora which help kill off deadly pathogenic bacteria. In animals, this is especially important, because if they do not maintain enough friendly intestinal flora, they can become infected by disease more easily. *

 

These friendly flora also help our digestive process, as they break down carbohydrates which are otherwise difficult to break down. The carbohydrates are fermented into SCFAs or short chain fatty acids and then can be used by the body as food and energy.  Friendly flora is also known to help produce certain vitamins, such as Vitamin K, and helps in their absorption. The SCFAs help to absorb iron, calcium, magnesium and other nutrients. *

 

The predominant flora in the small intestine is species of lactobacilli. Lactobacilli produce lactic acids which help in the digestion of dairy products, lower cholesterol, break down proteins, and aid in reducing acid reflux. They are also found in the large intestine, but the majority of bacteria here is species of Bifidobacteria, which help to control and eliminated harmful bacteria. *

 

Lactic acid producing bacteria also have the affect of strengthening the immune system. Studies have found that Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli can help keep tumors from forming. Many other studies are underway to discover how these types of flora can help with a variety of chronic issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohns Disease, Colitis, and many other forms of dysbiosis. *
